These are important questions, Amy. Yes, do water transplanted irises as
they become established. I think John Jones' answers are excellent on this
point.
By the way, there's a brief but helpful article about TB care in the "Basic
Iris Culture" booklet AIS sends new members.

In Arkansas rot is such a concern that foliar feeding is taboo. TB irises
don't usually need that extra nutrition, anyway. We are taught to fertilize
with high phosphate in spring before bloom. I don't think even that feeding
is all that necessary in good soil, but people like to fertilize in spring,
so pricketh them Nature in their corages. Some of the experts here also
fertilize once before winter, to make sure growing roots find plenty to
eat. I just don't. I put a lot of effort into giving the plants good soil
to start with, and what am I supposed to be, their short order cook? ;->
