A few months back I posted mini-reviews of all the beginner books currently
available. You might want to prowl through the archives. I don't know
anything about Stebbings, but Glasgow is an accomplished New Zealand
irisarian. Her book is (I think) the best illustrated of all the beginner
books--lots of good color photos. It is also nice in giving a fair
treatment to all the different kinds of irises, especially beardless. (It's
rare to see a beginner's book with more than a couple paragraphs about
spurias, for instance.) Its weaknesses are a lack of cultivar
recommendations (I know these become quickly out of date, but most
beginners really appreciate them) and not having much that would pique
interest in more advanced topics.

Happy irising, Tom
