Karen Glasgow edited the Bulletin of the New Zealand Iris Society for 22
years, maintaining an enviable high standard of selection and writing.
She was president of the Society for a 3 year stint in the `1960s, was a
Senior Judge, a Tutor Judge and participated in all aspects of the
Society's activities over a 40+ year period. In 1986 the British Iris
Society awarded her the Foster Memorial Plaque for outstanding service to
the iris world. Karen's chief interest lay in the species iris, many of
which she grew in her suburban garden in Nelson. Her book was on the
stocks for quite a few years before a publisher could be found - a fairly
common situation for New Zealand writers addressing a limited audience in
a small country. It is particularly aimed at the general gardener who
becomes interested in irises and covers a wide range at an informed
elementary level with many good colour photos. Karen died in 1995 in her
late eighties, just before the book was published.
