In the rotlands, this does happen occasionally. Julie Allen says that
moisture accumulating in the leaf bases on the bloom stalk etc can contribute
to rot. The more I watch my plants succumb to various wretched conditions,
the more I am convinced that a lot of (all?) rot problems result from some
kind of injury to the plant. Insect bites, freeze damage, suffocation from
being under water, wind damage, rampaging deer, birds, ... probably poor
nutrition contributes to it. So, if the question was what causes it, I
dunno. What to do about it.. dunno that either. Try again next year? Move
to California?

First two seed pod stalks have rotted thru, pods have enough stalk that they
are in a jar with Sprite and blossom fresh. If the stalks rot off to the
base of the pod, I will try the potato technique. Race the clock to
ripening...
