One of the great advantages of the cold winters in areas such as Ottawa
(Zone 4B, rather than Zone 3, as Maureen suggested) is that they are
idea for most irises except lousianan and pacific irises. All the rest
thrive largely because the conditions are very similar to their natural
habitats. One disadvantage is that when a warm spell arrives (33.5C
this week!), everything blooms at once. I have cristata, SB, TB,
siberians, spurians, onchocyclans, and species all blooming this week.
The only ones that are not are the Japanese! This means that I am going
under trying to confirm identifications, record blooming, check labels,
and photograph special flowers. It also brings out the many neighbours
who want tours of the garden!
All that was off topic. I really wished to raise a problem with the
identification of bulleyana. I have a large flowering plant from my
Bruce Richardson collections which is labelled bulleyana. I thought
that I would check this using the key on p 135 in the new BIS species
book. Unfortunately, it does not key out to bulleyana as the spathe is
obviously scarious at flowering. It is clearly not sibirica and keys to
phragmitetorum. As this iris is apparently very rare in cultivations,
it seems most unlikely that Bruce would have a specimen that is very
well established. (I took less than half of Bruce's clump).
Has anyone else tried to key out bulleyana using the new book? Is there
are obvious error in the book? There are other errors, for example,
bulleyana does not have leaves that reach 4 inches in width!!
Any help would be welcome.
Ian
