Today is our annual TB iris show ... and I'm out of here as soon as the sun
is up. Our big show is held in the the Buffalo Botanical Gardens - a
fantastic Lloyd & Burnham Victorian glass conservatory built in 1900. The
irises always look their very best, since they are shown in natural light.
This year we are expanding our show to include some new and exciting
elements:
1. A 'mock show'. I just love this idea (that we shamelessly adapted from a
chance conversation I had on a bus at convention last year). While our show
is being judged, we will have a parallel show of 'also rans', the unnamed,
the excess and etc. One of our best judges - very high on the schmooze scale
(in fact, we call schmoozing "Burking" here after this man... Jim Burke),
will judge the show out loud for those interested so that our members... and
the public... can see what the judges are doing in the other room!
2. A youth coloring contest. We have tried various horticultural ploys to
get kiddos involved... now our Carolyn has let us know that there are OTHER
approachs - so she has put together a coloring contest which will also be
judges.
3. A Founders Reception. We have the very good fortune of being a
long-standing club... although we have evolved considerably over the years.
This year we have lost several members which caused us to realize that we
need to honor the ones we have left before it's too late. We sent
invitations with the show notice.
So - there's nothing to do now but check out my pitiful bloom and hightail it
to the gardens!
