The first bloom on a Japanese Iris opened up today. It is an older
white whose identity is unknown. It came from my late Grandmother's garden
and was purchased sometime between the 1930's and the 1960's. I remember
seeing that plant as a child in the late 1960's, so it is historic for
sure. It wasn't until the mid 1980's that anyone finally figured out that
it was a type of Iris.
She lived in a community known as one of the most remote in the
eastern US. That was probably the only Japanese Iris in the whole area.
Where it came from, I have no idea. In fact, this was one that even Phil
Edinger could not identify. (Not faulting him; it is unrealistic to expect
one person to know every Iris ever released.) If anyone on the list is
good at identifying older Japanese Irises from photos, please let me know.
