CULT: last report

THought I'd just post a brief report at the end of the season here. The very
last of the TBs opened its last gasp tody--BROADWAY, with 2 standards and 2
falls. Pathetic, but I've seen several of the late bloomers do this this
year. At the same time, the first of the spurias opened today. I only have
three, but I've managed to mix up the labels some years back, and lost one
completely. The one opening is the unnamed, a deep indigo blue with a small
signal of yellow veining. The other two are RESPONSE, which I think is going
to bloom big time, and DRESS CIRCLE, which isn't.
The favorite TB of almost everybody who visited my garden this spring was
CHAMPAGNE WISHES (Keppel), a lovely thing in bright salmon overlaid with a
smooth wash of transparent lavender. Unfortunately, it's a big clump which is
entirely blooming out, so I'll have to do the save-the-stalk trick to get it
to recover.
I think my best seedling was one of the BATMAN X THORNBIRD cross, which ended
up as a nice smooth deep purple with some haft markings but sadly no horns.
Hmmph. And there was the interesting one whose pollen parent was DIVINE LIGHT
--white with chartreuse and lavender touches and a very lavender beard. Too
subtle for most, though.
So now I'm talking to the daylilies and native asters, neither of which are
blooming yet, and waiting for hopefully some rebloomers.
