Only this year? I observe the same phenomenon with the last flowers of many
cultivars, especially the late bloomers, every year. Seems like they run
out of gas before they quite reach the finish line.

Have you seen the article by George Sutton in the April, 1997 AIS Bulletin
on hybridizing Space Agers? He reports a higher rate of success in
obtaining horned seedlings from a cross of NON-horned X Horned parents than
by crossing two Horned parents.
