Thanks for your comments.  I would say that the plant I have is "a very
dark violet, somewhat narrow of parts".  It is not very tall this year -
about two and a half feet. I meant BLACK GAMECOCK.  My point about cold
is that Ottawa is an order of magnitude colder than Maryland.  At a
guess, 35-40 degrees colder during the coldest part of the year.  We
would consider the Washington area quite tropical, even in winter!!  For
this reason, I had been lead to believe that Louisianans were just not
worth trying here.
