Re: CULT: '99 Iridaceae Yard Awards - one

From: "Donald Eaves" <donald@eastland.net>

Hello Folks,

I have decided to give awards to those cultivars which were deserving
based on their performance this spring of '99. As all award ceremonies
are, this will be long and tedious, complete with dud humor and somewhat
bizarre categories. It is likely to share with other awards a total and
complete irrelevance to any meaningful insights to growing irises (I live
in dry, hot and currently drought stricken Texas, after all). To make them
easier to read, I will not post everything at once, so will number the
posts
(this is primarily so I can tell where I've been, sort of like using the
finger
while reading). These will also serve as the very necessary commercial
breaks (I drink lots of coffee). In any case, when the above subject tags
are evident, find the delete key.

Best Ensemble Performance:
The Louisiana irises. Every plant increased, grew vigorously and
bloomed to a one. This after being a bovine snack sometime in the late
winter when they were growing like crazy. Can't argue with 100% bloom.

Best Bud:
SATAN'S MISTRESS (Seligmann '82). This arilbred registered as
a TB has wonderful black ones. They look great early and really build the
anticipation for waiting for the bloom to open. Other really good ones
were
ZANTHA, CHINA DRAGON, I pseudacorus, STEPPING OUT.
