Well, here are the next tier of Iridaceae Yard Awards.
Best Tapestry Color:
Given to a color range which includes some art shades, but
not all and includes the blacks, burgundies, reds and some golds
and oranges. The award goes to KOKO KNOLL (Hunt '84). This
arilbred is a wonderful blend of old gold, dark yellow, touches of
of tan and hints of maroon. Also good were LUMIERE D'AUTOMN
and BRINDISI.
Best Art Shade:
This category was discussed extensively with great insight
on this list and can be found in the archives. The award goes to
JADE QUEEN (Knopf '58), a clear winner. Soft and subtle and I
found it very appealing. Already look forward to bloom again next
spring. This one was a nice surprise since it was one I bought for
the catalog description (meaning I had no idea what I was getting).
Also rans: THORNBIRD and TRAITOR.
Best Median:
JEWEL OF OMAR (Boswell '86) gets the honor. Eleven
bloomstalks on a clump about a foot across made this arilbred
a winner. The second year for a good show, too. Runnerup:
CHIMERA.
Best Arilbred:
This was a pretty close contest, but the award ultimately
went to SAHRA TASH (Shockey '86). Four stalks and quietly
weatherproof, this pretty iris had staying power and I liked it
better everytime I looked at it. Other good ones were KOKO KNOLL,
ESTHER THE QUEEN, SYRIAN PRINCESS and, of course, JEWEL
OF OMAR.
