Re: CULT: '99 Iridaceae Yard Awards - three

From: "Donald Eaves" <donald@eastland.net>

You have to wait toward the end for the best of all awards.

Best Siberian:
Not a lot of choices here, but SEA SHADOWS (Brummit '82)
deserves something. It insists on staying petite, but blooms and blooms
and blooms. Every year I think it may bloom out, but the next spring
there are all those blooms again. I did have one bloom on BUTTER
AND SUGAR.

The Greta Garbo "I want to be alone" award:
Give to an iris(es) which aren't congenial among the other irises.
This award goes to BATIK (Ensminger '86). This distinctive and pretty BB
is not a good mixer. Maybe if I could get some white ones to perform and
have it in front of them, but I'm doubtful. Even some irises I didn't much
care for didn't clash with their neighbors. It will have to have it's own
spot
alone. Runner up was MOVE OVER. This MTB would probably have
fared better if hadn't been planted in close proximity to CHIMERA and
JEWEL OF OMAR. As neighbors, the effect made MO look garish, so
another relocation is in order.

Best Color Contrast:
The award goes to AMERICAN SWEETHEART (Sexton '83). The
glowing burnt orange standards were described as golden brown in the
catalog. Too dull! The contrast with the dark red falls was attractive
and
very pleasing. Also very popular with visitors. Runner-up - TANYA.

Best Blousy Award:
Given to an iris with wide falls and possessing a billowing effect. May
not be a judge's choice, but it's an effect I find pleasing. These drape,
not
droop and the blooms have a nice move in the breeze as a result. This
award
goes to BRINDISI (Schreiners '79). This burnt orange with a touch of brown

draped in an informal and pleasing manner, but didn't come apart in the
wind.
Keeping it company but not quite as billowing were ROYAL TOUCH, MASTER
PLAN and VIBRATIONS each with their own variation of style.

Best Tailored Form:
Award to AT LAST (McAllister '93). Clean, pure lines and a nice
flaring form. Proof that at least for me form and pattern can have as much
appeal as color. This was a great architectural bloom, uncompromised with
any unnecessary embellishments.

The "O.K. - I don't mind the ruffles" award:
ASPECTS OF LOVE (Schick '98) has the perfect color for ruffles. A
contrast of peachy pink standards with lighter peachy pink falls, all
ruffled to
a fare thee well. The ruffles were an enhancement here. A close runner-up
was
GLACIER POINT (Tasco '98). The ruffles were so measured and consistant on
this blue white, I couldn't imagine the blooms without them.
