I've only been scanning this thread so I apologize if this material has been 
mentioned already. But for those who can use the info in one place:

The AHS Plant Heat-Zone Map was introduced and explained in the Sept/Oct 
issue of 'The American Gardener', the publication of the American 
Horticultural Society. 

Dr. H. Marc Cathey, former head of the society developed the map, and also 
has written a book which maybe useful for some. This is ' Heat Zone 
Gardening: How to Choose Plants that Thrive in your Regions Warmest Weather." 
This book is available from your local bookseller or the usual on-line 
places.
