Hi all:
Have been reading about shows around the country and thought I would add the
North East Ohio Iris Society shows that Tony and I chaired this year.
The Early Iris Show was held at Chapel Hill Mall in Akron, Ohio, on Thursday,
May 13. Five entrants came up with 126 entries which included MDB, SDB, IB,
MTB, TB and species - I cristata, tectorum and typhifolia. At this show we
normally expect a majority of SDBs with a number of MDBs and IBs. This year,
the Best Specimen was a TB, JESSE'S SONG, and the runner-up was our IB,
MALIBU WILDFIRE. Other best of section winners were CAMEO CUTIE, MDB;
EMERALD STAR, SDB; and I. cristata. Our SDB seedling W 99-19 won Best
Seedling.
On Monday, May 31 (Memorial Day) the Annual Iris Show was held for the first
time in the City of Cleveland, Rockefeller Park Greenhouse. This is where
Tony and I maintain our public iris planting. In spite of many TBs past
peak, we had a good turnout of 10 entrants with 136 entries. Classes
represented were IB, BB, MTB, TB, SIB and species - I. pseudacorus, setosa
and versicolor. The most entries were 56 in the Siberian class and 38 in the
tall bearded class. We were very happy to see our entry and introduction,
ICE GODDESS, TB, win Best Specimen. There were three perfect open blooms
with palest violet standards, white falls and orange-red beards. Runner-up
was a magnificent Siberian, BERLIN PURPLE WINE -- large, glowing wine red
with white signal pattern. Other section winners were BUMBLEBEE DEELITE,
MTB, BROWNBERRY, BB, and I. setosa x 'Kosho En' Best Seedling was Mike
James' TB, MJ 99-11
Tony and I won Horticultural Sweepstakes in both of these shows and one in
Akron on Saturday, May 29, because we brought more specimens than all other
entrants combined. Mike James won runner-up in all three shows. We feel bad
about hogging all the silver medals, but if we don't bring a quantity of
entries, there isn't much for the public to see. Ours are very small shows
compared to those I've been reading about. Either the season is too early or
too late or the deer ate the buds. (The deer really went after our Siberian
buds this year.) We have to beg people to enter so we will have enough
entrants to qualify as an official show. AIS changing the requirement from 3
to 5 entrants made life much more difficult for us.
I also won some awards in the Artistic Design area.
