HYB: my update
From: Dennis Kramb <dkramb@badbear.com>
I just walked around and counted my seed pods. I found 65 total, with 5 of
them lacking labels (probably bee pods). The oldest pods are finally
starting to turn brown. Should I harvest now or wait till they split open?
(My first crosses were done on 17th of April.)
Some pods on my MDBs have holes in them...as if an insect burrowed inside.
The holes are 1/8 inch across and perfectly round.
I attempted approximately 40 crosses with beardless irises, but only 6
still have pods. I believe Dr. Z's theory is right that they withered away
because of lack of rain...because most of those 40 crosses actually did
start forming pods in the first week or two.
Question: My beardless species are mostly natives like virginica,
versicolor, and fulva. Should I plant seeds now? or in the fall? I'm not
sure what's best in my climate.
