This one one of those unusual springs when GERMANICA manages to bloom so
I daubed some pollen from supposedly sterile germanica on RASPBERRY JAM
& got a pod. I think. It was such a long shot, I didn't label the
bloom, but one pod formed on the stalk & no others showed up anywhere
else, so ..
Just harvested 3 fat seeds. The seeds are odd looking - large,
perfectly round like fresh peas, and very pale. But I'm used to seeing
TB seeds out of packed pods, where the seeds are angular, smaller, and
darker, even when fresh.
Check back in 5 years or so and I will know for sure what I've got,
assuming they germinate and live.
After all the discussions about TB tets actually being (drat, I am so
bad at terminology) allotetraploids? rather than true tetraploids, and
previous discussions about germanica being sterile, I figured that
germanica might have chromosomes that would match up better with SDBs
than with TBs. Based on growth habits & lack of fertility with TBs. &
intuition.
Sharon, have you got time to figure out why this worked and explain it?
Help me sort out my intuition?
