iris-bigfoot destruction

From: Patsiris@aol.com

I have just had a new 6' wooden fence constructed around our back yard. The
head man's parting words were, "I hope we didn't do too much damage to your
flowers."
Other than smashing the back row of iris into the ground and some others on
the way to the back row, they did pretty well. Is there anything in
particular that I can do to help the situation? Wringing my hands and
crying doesn't seem to help much.
Should I cut back the foliage? It is lying on the ground. Water?
Not water?
Administer last rites? Any help would be appreciated.
I knew this was likely to happen, but I tried not to think of it. Now
it is a fact and I must face it and try to do something helpful.
