For several years, as a 4-H leader, I helped a youth group prepare a 10x20
garden plot for competion at the local Fair. The previous garden leader had
told the kids to put down cocoa hulls as a ground cover, and so I did the
first year. It sure looks pretty. But in 2-3 days, after the daily
watering we had to do, the cocoa hulls molded terribly, matted into one
solid layer, and looked ugly. It was awful when we had to clean out the
garden plot at the end of the fair. Never again. However, if worked into
the ground to begin with, they would probably be the fasted thing to
compost!
