I think a lot depends on your soil type and how much rain you get where you
live. I grow my iris in the mixed border-lots of tall beardeds, and mine
are mulched just like everything else to reduce weeds and hold in soil
moisture. I use shredded cedar bark, anything from two to four inches of
it. I have also used straw one year when I was short of cedar bark. Works
well for me, but the soil here is very sandy, once you get through the first
six inches or so, and drains rapidly. Might be a bad idea in heavier soils.
