Cocoa hulls are the hulls left over from processing cocoa beans to make
cocoa, chocolate, etc. I buy them in 45 lb burlap sacks. Try to avoid
buying them in plastic bags...the moisture within causes them to mold. We
used to get them free from Ambrosia Chocolate in Milwaukee but since they
have become popular mulch they are no longer free. I noticed as I was
mulching yesterday that my latest batch was imported from Indonesia. I pay
about $7.50 for 45 lbs and they tend to go a long way since they are smaller
than bark, etc. Check with a nursery or garden supply store. I use them
around everything but bearded irises. They are supposedly a good source of
nitrogen also.
I have read stories from other talkers who did not like them but the only bad
ones I ever had were in a plastic bag. Other than that, they smell divine
and are very easy to manipulate with your hands or a rake around all your
plants. The reddish brown color is a great background for green leaves of
your plants too.
