Dear Barbara:  I had quite a few stalks that withered near the top, and
everything above that point went into decline. It surely means that the
roots are  unable to support the stalk with adequate nourishment, so the
top portion is aborted. Down here in North Carolina it could mean too much
heat too early in the formation of the stalk. It could also mean not enough
moisture to help the roots do their job. It is discouragin to see this, but
I had so many good stalks that I just forget about the calamities. They
seem to occur among the early irises more than among the later-blooming
