Cult: Unknown TB in Iris-Photo, Nov 15 98 - question

From: Sandy Ives <rives@home.com>

I posted a couple of photos to Iris-photo on the date above and which are still
on Tom Tadfor Little's web page
(http://www.telp.com/gardening/irises/index.html). The one in question is the
yellow self.

I haven't had great response on this, not that I expected a lot. The two
comments both suggest Ola Kola.

However, time has brought some interesting developments.

I have been going through the 1949 check list looking for the hybridizer E.
Bartlett (paternal great-grandfather) whose son-in-law (paternal grandfather),
was the photographer - a very aggressive gardener in his own right. (That gene
expressed itself very late in my father's case however).

I discovered an introduction 'Lemon Chiffon' (E. Bartlett '44) TB-E Y4L. A
yellow self, and it is still available (via Chuck Chapman in Ontario, Canada).
I ordered two naturally.

My question to the list... can anyone positively identify that photo as Ola
Kola. It is definitely a different colour... at least compared to the photo on
the HIPS site
(http://www.worldiris.com/public_html/Frame_pages/QFix.html). However, I think
the form of the bloom is different as well. Obviously I have not been able to
compare them in the garden or on the bench (yet). And colour comparisons on a
computer monitor is a mug's game, excuse the colloquialism ;-).

So, to date, I have identified 'J.S. Woodsworth', 'Lemon Chiffon', and 'Mary
Bartlett' as being introductions from my great grandfather. All in the 1949
check list.

Fun stuff.

Regards,

Sandy Ives in Ottawa Canada (z4ish, who now has a new iris bed instead of an old
tulip bed under the lilac tree. If the lilac tree isn't a pleasant neighbour,
should it survive? Suggested neighbours would be appreciated!)
