HIST TB: FIRE CHIEF
From: Barb Johnson <bdjohnson@atlascomm.net>
Hi all,
I think that mystery variegata I have with the thin gold line around the
falls that is a large iris and bloomed late may be Fire Chief. It was
the last iris in our garden to open except for one of Adam Mueller's
seedlings and the surprise Vitality. The description seems to fit:
FIRE CHIEF
Dr. Frank B. Galyon (TN)1959 36" LM Y4
HONORABLE MENTION 1959
Bright yellow standards over brown-red falls, hairline margin of yellow;
clean haft. Mission, Tell 1959. Sdlg. GN-1: Gypsy X Louise Black
However, The World of Irises says it is "without the usual yellow
margins" (pg. 111). Does this mean that the iris they saw named Fire
Chief didn't have this margin? I'm pretty sure it doesn't mean that most
variegatas have the gold margin--at least the pictures on the HIPS
website didn't show the margin. But I guess I'll go by the description
for now.
So, does anyone else grow this? It was very striking and clean looking,
and we liked it very much. Large flowers, big healthy plant, late
bloomer (we don't have nearly enough of those!). Are there any other
variegatas with this yellow rim on the falls that are late
bloomers?
Thanks again! --Barb
