CULT: TB: thunderboomer test

From: "J.F. Hensler" <hensler@povn.com>

Just got back from checking on the garden now that the rain has stopped.

A big, slow moving thunderstorm passed through and we were lucky not to be
hit by the leading edge. Forecasters were sending out "violent storm"
warnings so I grabbed an arm full of TBs and Sib stems and stuffed them
into a vase just in case the worst happened.

All told, we got 1 3/10" of rain since yesterday afternoon. (We had a mini
lake in the driveway.) Wind gusts probably never went over 45 mph and the
worst lightning was off to both sides of us. It rained hard enough to
flatten pansies and our 8' mock oranges are bent over to 4 1/2'.

A few TBs are listing quite badly. Large clumps of Vanity, Royalist, and
Starlit River got pounded. Quite a few stalks on most cvs leaning badly are
more from the loose soil suddenly being saturated coupled with water logged
blooms. Quite a few blooms on almost everything are pounded and even the
Sibs look like they've been hit with buckshot. (This is from the force of
the rain. We never did see hail.)

Two stand out from the crowd...

Blenheim Royal with as many as 4 blooms open on each stem in a mini clump
is ramrod straight. Blooms are crisp and look hardly touched!

Dusky Challenger opened 3 blooms on one stalk sometime during the storm.
This one hasn't clumped yet and I'm curious about how deep those roots had
to go to keep it anchored this well. Gorgeous.
