Everything here with deep roots is on gravel <G> - even the ones in
raised beds of good soil have the opportunity to get to gravel if they
work at it. But I don't have DUSKY C out in the plowed rows in the
gravel field. I didn't mean to give the impression that it doesn't
bloom well - it does make gorgeous bloom stalks. Just that it doesn't
tend to "clump up" into a dense thicket of bloom like some do. Like you
say, it needs to be divided fairly often or it doesn't bloom well - in
other words, it tends to fizzle out instead of making a heavy blooming
clump. It is still my all time favorite.
Not sure I'm expressing this very well..and at the moment, I am drawing
a blank on examples of recent, popular irises that DO clump well. Maybe
somebody else can think of some....
STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN makes a pretty spectacular clump before needing
dividing.

I think mold is starting to grow inside my lungs - we've finally gotten
several inches of rain with temperatures in the 80s F as it rains ....
suffocating.
