Can't address the issue of fertilizer. Early fertilizers that I know about 
are manure, seaweed, pomace, and marl, but that only goes back to the 
Renaissance. Someone  else may be up on the Georgics or whatever and be able 
to tell us about whatall maketh the crops rejoice. 

I simply took the reference to intend a sacramental libation.
