This has to have turned into one of the most specious disagreements on this 
list to date. I have chosen to include my country since it seems appropriate 
to do so and I have noticed most others from the US quietly affixing their 
country designation - no noise, just doing it out of courtesy. We don't need 
a survey on a topic that has nothing to do with irises, our main discussion 
topic (or it used to be).

Here in cold, snowy USDA Zone 3, I have been out shoveling snow on the 
bearded rhizomes, mostly medians, that I had planted around the foundation 
and of course the snow melted but the ground is frozen without the white 
mulch. We still have snow and very cold weather after a fairly mild winter. 
I think the lowest it got was -35F degrees (only twice) which makes it a 
Zone 4 winter here in Zone 3.

Never saw a borer and I never want to but I think we might have the right 
climactic conditions this Spring. Ouch. Used to be we were still
frozen solid when the borer did its thing in the Spring...whatever it does. 
I gloss over anything that is "bad" that doesn't pertain to my garden. 
Better pull out the iris reference books soon and start reading...
