I'm glad I'm not the only one who found the list humorous. From what I
gather:

> It conduces to the health of babies to have this tied
> on them, especially when they are teething or
> suffering from cough,
...... It's good (and decorative) for fussy babies.

> and to inject it into those suffering from tapeworms.
......... I don't want to touch this one. I've seen tapeworm in dogs - I
don't want to visualize what you're supposed to do with the rhizome.

> Its other properties are not much different from those of honey. It
> cleanses sores on the head, especially abcesses of long standing.
......... you can wear rhizomes on your head to hide a bad hair month :-)

> Taken in
> doses of two drachmae with honey it relaxes the bowels;
........ use it as a laxative.

> taken in drink it relieves cough, griping, and flatulence;
.............. strong drink, one assumes, especially for the griping.

> in vinegar, complaints of the spleen.
............... you can use it to win the funniest face contest at the state
fair.

> In vinegar and water it is an antidote against the bites of snakes
and of spiders;
......... irrigated or drank? I'd hate to be wrong on this one.

> against stings of scorpions two drachmae by weight are
> taken in bread or water;
............. and I would also irrigate with it, wear the rhizome, and
inject it, just to cover all the bases.

> for dog bites and abrasions it is applied in oil.
........ that must mean it's good for people bites too - good to know.

warts.

............. I'm tossing my first aid kit out of the plane, and just
bringing along a couple of iris rhizomes.

...........I knew there was a catch to this.
Thanks Jeff, for the translation. I looked up Pliny earlier on the internet
and came up only with the Latin version of this text.
