This might be the most "genuine" remedy of the lot. I think the idea is
that the little darlings are supposed to have it handy to chew or suck on
to relieve the discomfort of teething. The rhizomes presumably contain a
numbing property. If memory serves (and more and more, it doesn't) there
may be more on this subject in the Archives from an earlier discussion on
the list.

I believe the reference here is to sharp pains in the bowels rather than
verbal complaints. The translation I was quoting is somewhat dated - there
appears to have been something of a run on Pliny at the library - all the
more recent editions were checked out.
