RE:CULT - Germinating Inhibitors

From: "Patrick Orr" <PatrickJOrr@hotmail.com>

I was just sitting here looking out the window at the rain when the words of someone came back to me...

"It seems after a rain the [iris] seeds just seem to jump out of the pot. I don't know why, but if we have rain they seem to germinate better."

That made me think of my 8 pots of seed in the back yard which I have out in the rain. I planted about 80 seeds and only 9 have germinated thus far. So I am hoping the rain will help.

Then I got to thinking, people use all kinds of methods to get the iris seeds to germinate. The method I use is a method to leach out the germinating inhibitor. Wouldn't it be great if someone would come up with a chemical that would neutralize the germinating inhibitor in the seed without damage to the seed itself? That way, we could just use the chemical, and then plant the seeds and have a normal germinating period.

Does anyone know about the inhibitor well enough to explain why this can or cannot be done. I am sure I am NOT the first one to think about this. So, my question is why hasn't this been invented yet?
