And Anner observes that some very substantial snows have fallen in March in
this part of central Virginia, which is about halfway up the east coast of
the USA as you look at a map, and it is far from unusual to still be in heavy
tweeds on St. Paddy's day. As I recall we had a snow in the second week of
March which measured 17 inches. I hope it will not be the case this year for
it will be a grave shock to the garden which is enduring other shocks today.
We are forecast to hit 86 degrees F, with lows near freezing to return early
next week. My garden is awake, with the leaves on the tree peony beginning to
unfurl, the old roses leafing out, and new growth on the perennials emerging
from the soil. The irises are in active growth, I've taken the protective
wrapping off the gardenia, and the huge crows are building their nest in the
big magnolia. But we are very dry.I watered the garden yesterday, which is a
first for March. Soon the big March winds will blow here, and I hope they are
not pushing snow.
