And Anner observes that some very substantial snows have fallen in March in 
this part of central Virginia, which is about halfway up the east coast of 
the USA as you look at a map, and it is far from unusual to still be in heavy 
tweeds on St. Paddy's day. As I recall we had a snow in the second week of 
March which measured 17 inches. I hope it will not be the case this year for 
it will be a grave shock to the garden which is enduring other shocks today. 
We are forecast to hit 86 degrees F, with lows near freezing to return early 
next week. My garden is awake, with the leaves on the tree peony beginning to 
unfurl, the old roses leafing out, and new growth on the perennials emerging 
from the soil. The irises are in active growth, I've taken the protective 
wrapping off the gardenia, and the huge crows are building their nest in the 
big magnolia. But we are very dry.I watered the garden yesterday, which is a 
first for March. Soon the big March winds will blow here, and I hope they are 
not pushing snow.
