Both ANNE STAHLMAN and MILDRED STAHLMAN were light blue Siberian irises
registered in 1931.
The 1939 Alphabetical Iris Check List indicates that Thomas A. Washington of
Nashville was the originator of these two Siberian irises. He and Mrs. E.C.
Stahlman worked together, and MARY GEDDES (Stahlman-Washington, 1931), which
is a bearded iris, is listed in the Check List in both their names.
Both irises were included in the Fairmount Gardens (Lowell, MASS) catalog in
1931, and 'Mildred' was listed again in 1938. There is no indication in the
Check List that any photographs accompanied the listings.
According to the most current information I have here, the Historic Iris
Preservation Society has no records of either iris surviving, at least under
her own name.
Unless someone pipes up at this point to say they know more on this subject,
my only suggestion is to see if any of Washington's relatives survive and if
they have preserved his papers, which might include photographs of the iris.
He lived at 1700 18th Ave., S., Nashville, and he died in 1939. Mrs. Stahlman
was also deceased by 1939.
