Several of our neighbors have horses and I probably use
several tons per year. We are talking an acre plus here.
It contains some nutrients and probably stuff other than
N-P-K which is useful. My main reason for using it is to
improve the soil which is quite sandy here.

If it is fresh I use it on areas where I will be planting
something like oats as a green manure crop. I prefer to
compost it in the soil since I am naturally lazy and that
means I only move and spread it once.

Even with well aged manure I do not plant iris for some time
after applying it. If I were planning to plant in Aug. I
would like to have the manure tilled in perhaps by late
June. In short, I use it a lot but I am rather careful
about planting iris in that bed.
