Anner,
Actually, I consider the stubborn refusal to bloom by an iris that
persists, even if it does not flourish, to be a challenge to be overcome
rather than a reason to attrit. Last year I won my longest running battle
so far with a non-bloomer when the spuria, ARCHIE OWEN, that I acquired in
1988 finally gave in to persuasion and produced a bloomstalk. ARCHIE was a
tough nut to crack, because my usual remedy for refusal to bloom is to
relocate the culprit, but spurias in general resent disturbance and won't
bloom until they have had a chance to settle in and become comfortable with
their surroundings. ARCHIE only got moved twice in those eleven years, and
ultimately decided to bloom the second year after she was moved back to the
spot where I first planted her. Either she liked getting back to familiar
surroundings, or an aggressive perennial sunflower (Helianthus
maximilianii) nearby scared her into doing it while she still had the
chance.
