This seems to be the case. perhaps a touch of motor oil
helps too. :-)
In the sandy loam we have, reticulata are more or
less permanent in garden beds. Danfordiae in the same
situation will last for two to three years.
The longest lasting danfordiae we had were planted in an
area in which the following year I decided to make into a
driveway (gravel not blacktop). I think they flowered for
six years in the driveway.
An interesting note: With the exception of only one year,
the day on which the first danfordiae has opened it's first
flower, has been the day on which we first hear the
beautiful song of the Western Meadowlark.
