Cultivation is said to create a dust mulch which aids the plants. A light
handed cultivation will speed drying, while deeper cultivation helps to
retain moisture in dry spells. Don't know about the results in severe
droughts. Have read where Dave Niswonger credited cultivation (dust mulch)
with getting his irises thru a fairly dry summer in better shape.
