Anner coined the term "insolent" for irises that don't
bloom, increase, or die. My Insolent Wall Of Fame:
BROADWAY - took five years before it bloomed. Is now in an
unmarked bed at work (I think), and has not bloomed in
several years.
FIDDLESTICKS - I started with three fans a couple years
ago, and now have four fans, and have never had it bloom.
The only thing that keeps it here is that it's a good color
orange, and the garden in WV that it came from had a row
several feet long - it must grow there!!!
BOGOTA - My favorite orange, but I got rid of it last year
- it would bloom every other year, one stalk, four buds.
GIGOLO and DAREDEVIL - One or two little stalks every other
year. Out!!!
STREET WALKER - doesn't bloom, although it does grow. I
would have gotten rid of it years ago, but the flower is so
gorgeous when it does bloom...
BUSY SIGNAL - Rot has about balanced increase, and it only
bloomed the first year I had it. But it was such a pretty
color brown and yellow (my favorite "maiden bloom" of '98),
I'll wait...
FEATURE ATTRACTION - I got this from Keith Keppel, who
listed it as "slow to increase" in his catalog. Three years
later, I have two fans...
FIFTH DIMENSION - neat color combo, but didn't grow, and
bud count was low for me.
I realize that most of these are probably doing well
somewhere in the world - local conditions or my brown thumb
may be to blame. What's on YOUR list?
