Re: First year - Iris Gardener

From: RYFigge@aol.com

Just in case I don't have your email address correct, Lucy, I'm sending this
on iris-talk also. I'm sure you will receive many answers. In the first
place - what is JAcksonville near? You are in Region 4, and there are about
3 Iris chapter in N.C. and they would lllloooovvvvvvveeeee to have you as a
member, and you can learn lots from them. The word is "rhizomes" and
pronounced "reye((that you see with)zomes (like zone with an "m") The
most economical markers are plastic spoons, marked on the bowl of the spoon
and also on the other side. Get those that do not have a smooth handle, so
there is a swelling or something in the handle so there is a little
resistance to heaving. A;lso don't make the mistake of marking across the
leaves which is what I did the first year! I use the spoons when planting
- then the following spring use a more prominent marker or your garden will
look like a mouse graveyard! I don't like the straight wooden garden
markers -- they eventually rot and break off -- also it is more difficult to
read up and down . Iris people are very helpful - so welcome to our Region
-- we have all kinds of activities. Rosalie nr Baltimore, USA zone 7
