The really fun bit is speculating what?
What could have been unstable enough to give this mutation?
What old variety matches 'Fran's/Jean's Flattie' closely (except for the form)?
My 'best match' is Edina (Lémon 1840). I haven't been able to get
anyone else to propose an alternate or to critique my guess. Edina
has an easily verifiable characteristic that can be matched to
'Fran's/Jean's Flattie': Edina is very, very, very late. In my garden
Edina will consistently be the last tall bearded iris in bloom.
Edina is the pod parent of B.Y. Morrison (Sturtevant 18) and B.Y.
Morrison is one of the latest iris to bloom that I own. (Only beat by
Edina, it's mama!) So, lateness is a trait that Edina passes to its
children.
If I can find out if 'Fran's/Jean's Flattie' is a very very late iris
I can say 'case closed' an Edina child or an Edina sport, and go on.
If 'F/J's Flattie' is a normal season bloomer I drop the Edina
hypothesis and look for another match.
But, someone with experience with 'F/J's Flattie' has got to have
some input and so far the 'F/J's Flattie' display on the HIPS unknown
page hasn't drawn much comment.
