I remembered lots of discussions in the past about alfalfa pellets and
indeed thare are a lot in the archives
(http://www.mallorn.com/lists/iris-talk/search.cgi). I think 1996 has
the best info. One of the things that was brought up is that apparently
rabbit food has molasses mixed in with the alfalfa, and while it is not
clear this is necessarily bad for irises, there is no need for the extra
expense associated with it. Horse feed is generally 100% alfalfa, but
check the label to be sure. What ever you get, do not get anything with
corn or a corn byproduct in it. The corn will act as an inhibitor to
root growth.
