John, THANK YOU for this memory dump.  What a lot of interesting and useful 
info!

Years ago I grew SON OF STAR, which for anyone wanting dayglo orange---that 
was it!  Unfortunately it also came with a real tendency to what I decided 
was  virus...and not only the flowers but the foliage looked worse each year. 
 Streaky, yellow, unthrifty.  I kept it anyway---UNTIL the other irises 
closest to this plant started showing the same symptoms.  Then it went OUT, 
incredible color or not.
