Ken,
     It sounds like I probably should keep them in pots.  We get cold enough 
every year to harm the buds I suspect.  If we get lucky, the coldest will be 
in the low half of the 20's.
     Our summers are hot, with most days hanging in the 95 - 98 degree range. 
 We did have one day last year that reached 108 F, but the plants were not 
harmed.  I keep the pots under decidous trees, so they get dappled sunlight, 
but are protected too.  I think you have dry heat, but here in summer, the 
heat is humid.
