From what I understand, it is possible for us to get temperatures
below 20F, but that only happens every couple decades. The
1998-1999 winter was very cold for us. We had about 5 nights
in a row in the low 20's. Neither Iris japonica nor Iris wattii bloomed
last spring. japonica had been planted the fall before but wattii had
bloomed the previous spring. I lost 3/4 of wattii during a heat wave when
we had several days of 107-108. Maybe I didn't water it enough. It
also showed frost damage during the hard freeze. This last winter we only
had 2 or 3 very light frost where I spotted a little white on the tips of some
grass in the neighborhood. The dwarf iris were perhaps a little happier
last spring, but a lot of plants are doing better this year.
