Hi Talkers,
I have heard the urban legends regarding irises that
change color. I know that in most cases it is an error
in someone's perception that their irises have changed
color: 1) overnight, 2) next spring, 3) over several
years.
I am a simple backyard/weekend gardener, all I want to
do in life is play in the dirt. I don't have any
degrees and I don't understand much but I don't think
it's a botano-physiological impossibility for an iris
to change color, is it?
What about the sports and mutations? Irisarians are
well aware of the "Honorabile Sports" which are
different colored irises that have sported from
Honorabile. I am not sure if they are actually
genetically different from one another though.
Once while touring Aitken's Garden I noticed a
different colored iris growing in his row of Joseph's
Coat Katkamier. I called Terry over to let him know
that there was something different in his row so he
wouldn't accidentally distribute it to someone
unsuspectingly. To my eye, it looked like all the
stalks were attached to the same rhizome and when he
pulled it out, they were indeed all growing from the
same rhizome. There was no mistake that this rhizome
had sported a different color pattern on one side of
the rhizome. Over the years in our iris history there
have been several cases of irises sporting different
colors. Just recently, Jared Harris put on the market
a white sport of Beverly Sills.
I once had an African Violet that bloomed purple
flowers on one half and pink on the other. Quite a
bizarre sight when in full bloom.
So can someone please explain if this is
botano-physiological change in the original plant.
Rare or not, I think it is a change.
