There are three ways to lengthen the flowering time. One
is to have more buds on the stalk. Hybridizers have been
working toward this for some time. This is also somewhat
dependent on local cultural conditions and area of the
country - warmer areas tend to get better bud counts.
Another way is to have the flowers stay out longer
before shrivelling. This is partly dependent on temperature
- in really hot temps, flowers shrivel quicker. Thicker,
heavier petals will stick around longer. Having thicker
petals is known as "substance". Ones that come to mind that
have this are AGAIN AND AGAIN, SPEED LIMIT, RUFFLED
FEATHERS, and AMERICAN GREETINGS. Others on the list can
probably add more.
The last way is to have rebloom - this is when the iris
gives additional bloomstalks later in the season. Only
certain varieties will do this, and it is more likely in
warmer zones.
