I don't know if it has been mentioned recently but a rehash can't 
hurt for anyone who may have missed the connection Black Forest = 
aphylla

The consequence to a greater or lesser extent is a tendency to:

shortness,

small flowers,

tendency to bloomout,

intense coloration,

blue beard coloration,

need for cold induced dormancy, etc., all traits that are expressed 
in many modern blacks.
