Back in the late 60's and 70's, it was done quite frequently, with the tip
end of the potato peeler. Leaving the rhyzome as growing, several gouges
were made along the rhyzome. This was done particularly in a plant that
"bloomed out", such as was quite common with GLORY BOUND(R. Nelson) and
HOMBRE:(R. Nelson) which were children of some of Melba Hamblin's strain and
had been known for "bloom out" The logic being that every fan had bloomed
and there was no more increase so nothing was lost if it didn't work.
Needless to say, many times there was increase with this method, and the
variety saved for another bloom season. M. Ferguson, Nebraska
