Seems like I recall that some pigments are the color they are because of
metals in the molecules (iron in red blood, magnesium? in chlorophylls &
vulcan blood <g>), so maybe if there is more of whatever trace element
it is that makes carotenes look yellow, the plant can make more of it?
& some cultivars may have more flexibility in how much energy they put
into making pigments, regardless of how much is available.
Yep, totally hazarded guess...
