MED:AR:

Just wanted to let the median iris enthusiasts in MIS section of AIS know that your copies of The Medianite went into (bulk) mail this morning, so you should get them in a week or so. (International copies were mailed yesterday, and may arrive sooner, at air 1st class!) (If anyone needs further information about how to join MIS/get this publication, feel free to e-mail me privately.)

In this issue are comments from display gardens, which always include at least a few about aril-medians. You may get some ideas about which ones do well in the north from the lists of top picks by these gardeners all over the country.

Judging from a few years of editing this publication now, one that is consistently mentioned as being ultra-hardy is "Loudmouth", a purple with dark 'beard spot' and white on hafts. The only one I've personally grown long enough to tell is "Patriot's Gem", a very pretty blue IB which doesn't look particularly "aril-y", but is nice!

We'll have an aril article coming up in next fall's issue by Cindy and Stephanie Rust (Zone 5)which will list several arils/aril-breds that have done well for them, both as growers and breeding material.

Loved the jersey cow comments--got quite nostalgic, as they were always such sweet-natured girls--except for one with one crooked horn that reminds me of some of my less symmetric space-age seedlings! Contrary!

Hope many of you are planning to attend the Median Odyssey 2001 garden tours in New England this spring, the week before the AIS convention. Great chance to see scads of new SDBs, IBs, MTBs, BBs, and one day of dwarfs (MDBs) as we roam north and south and up and down in altitudes for maximum bloom of various kinds.

Nyla Hughes, Zone 6, where the snow went north of us, iris reticulatas are in bloom, late-planted rhizomes are winter-heaving in spite of traction sand, and the first pink chionodoxas and daffodils are out. Ah, spring...

For more details on this, see p. 23 of the Jan. 2001 AIS Bulletin, or I think you can contact the Godfreys of Hermit Medlars Gardens, hmwalk@ici.net, or write to Marcia Connolly, 6 Green Way, Chelmsford, MA 01824-4809. Registration blanks are in last fall's Medianite or the one just coming out. These special median tours only happen about every 3-5 years, so enjoy!
